(1) Smartphones

-Smartphones can use traditional methods to make phone calls and send messages using mobile network.
-Smart phones have operating systems which allows them to run multiple applications.
-Like tablet computers, Smart phones have many features including:
  • Touch technology.
  • Sensors.
  • Cameras.
  • Internet connection  (Wireless/3G/4G).                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Disadvantages:                                                                   Advantages:
    • Small in size and easier to carry around.              Battery life is short.
    • Touch screen technology.                                       Small screen makes it difficult to read.
    • Can be moved whilst on the move using              Slow data transfer rates.
wireless or 3G/4G connectivity.                               Limited storage/memory compared to other computer types.

(2) Tablet computer
    - Tablets are very similar to smartphones.
         - They have an internet connection via a wireless connection including 3G/4G.
         - Tablets make use of touch screen technology to select options on a menu or to select particular icons.
         - Applications can be downloaded and installed.
         - Sensors including speech recognition.

                  Advantages:                                                                     Disadvantages:

  •  High definition anti glare display.                                                       -Limited memory compared to laptops.
  • Wireless, 3G/4G and Bluetooth connection.                                       -Expensive to use 3G/4G internet.
  • Data can be backed up or synchronised with other devices.         - Typing can be more difficult compared to normal                                                                                                           keyboard.
  • Touch screen technology.                                                                      - Not all files are compatible with tablets.
  • Battery life longer than a smartphone.
  • Portable.

(3) Laptop computer

-Laptops refer to a computer where all components (monitor, keyboard etc.) are together on a single device.

-Laptops are able to be folded flat for transportation and have a built-in keyboard and touchpad with built-in monitor and rechargeable battery.

Advantages:
  • It's portable due to small size and weight.
  • Battery can be recharged.
  • Can connect wireless to internet.
  • No loose cables, all components connected together.
 Disadvantages:
  • Limited battery life.
  • Laptops are difficult to repair and upgrade.
  • Can be stolen or lost.
  • Some users find it difficult to use pointing device.

(4) Personal computer (Desktop)

                - Desktop computers normally have seperate monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc.

                - They are designed to be used by one person at a time.

                - Can perform tasks such as gaming, school work, household accounts, internet access and emailing.

Advantages:

  • Always connected to the mains.
  • Monitors can come in any sizes.
  • Can be upgraded and parts easily replaced.
  • Tend to have a higher specification than laptop computers.

Disadvantages:

  • Not portable.
  • Takes up more desk space.
  • Separate components like keyboard,mouse,monitor,speakers,etc.
  • Loose cables which could be trip hazards.

(5) Super computers

-A computer with high level of performance compared to a general-purpose computer.

-Supercomputers contain tens of thousands of  processors and can perform billions and trillions of calculations or computations per second.

                                                                               Advantages:

  • Used for huge operations that require high speed and complicated calculations.
  • Testing mathematical models, complex physical phenomena or designs, such as climate and weather, evolution of the astronomy, nuclear weapons and reactors, new chemical compounds (especially for pharmaceutical purposes).
  • Can test big experiments.

Disadvantages:
  • Big size.
  • Too expensive.
  • Can't be used for personal use.

(6) Personal Digital Assistance (PDA)

- A term for a small mobile,handheld device
-    It provides computing and information storage and retrieval capabilities for personal or business use, often for keeping schedules, calendars, and address book information handy.

Advantages:
  • Small portable size
  • Used to perform specific light jobs: run multimedia software, keeping schedules, global positioning system.
  • Help monitor day arrangements.
Disadvantages:
  • Not widely used, smartphones/apps could replace it's job.
  • Small/easy to lose.
  • Can only help with small tasks

(7) Wearable computers

- Electronic devices that can be attached on the human body such as the smartwatch and smart glasses.
- It can track heart beat, physical movement and much more.

Advantages:
  • Can be helpful on the daily basis.
  • Allows easier communication.
  • Portable, not too heavy.
  • They provide biometric data, such as pulse rate, temperature, muscle stretch, heart rhythm and physical movement.
  • Monitor fitness levels.
Disadvantages:
  • Really expensive
  • Easy to break/lose
  • Difficult to type in smartwatches because of small screen.
